Job Description

The Equity and Access Office is recruiting for a professional position serving the NAU community in all areas of equal opportunity and compliance with non-discrimination law and policy. The successful candidate will be self-directed, reliable, professional, and respectful of confidential/highly sensitive information. This position will be responsible for conducting well-documented and professional investigations of complaints of discrimination and harassment and writing detailed investigative reports. This position will also advise the university community on applicable policies and procedures. This position will be filled at the Intermediate or Senior level, depending on qualifications.

Equal Opportunity Analyst, Intermediate

Investigations and Reports - 75%
  • Assist with thorough, prompt, and equitable investigations of complaints brought pursuant to the university's Nondiscrimination and Antiharassment Policy and related state and federal law.
  • Make investigatory findings and recommendations.
  • Write detailed, comprehensive, and accurate investigative reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of responses to enforcement agencies.
  • Attend enforcement agency meetings and proceedings as directed.

Education and Consultation - 10%
  • Assist in the development and presentation of appropriate training for the university community regarding compliance, diversity, inclusion, and best practices.
  • Consult with all levels of university management and administration regarding university nondiscrimination policy and procedures.

Equity and Inclusion - 10%
  • Represent the Equity and Access Office on diversity commissions.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs and procedures that support the university affirmative action and equal opportunity objectives.
  • Provide support for the university affirmative action plan goals and related corrective measures.

Other Duties - 5%
  • Keep current with non-discrimination laws and best practices in higher education and employment.
  • Assist with investigations of other university policy violations when directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Equal Opportunity Analyst, Senior

    Minimum Qualifications

    Equal Opportunity Analyst, Intermediate
    • Associates or Bachelor's degree, AND
    • Two or more years' related experience in conducting investigations of complaints or concerns related to the conduct of employees or students, or equivalent experience conducting other types of investigations or complaint review, OR
    • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    • Bachelor's degree, AND
    • Three or more years' related experience in conducting investigations of complaints or concerns related to the conduct of employees or students, or equivalent experience conducting other types of investigations or complaint review, OR
    • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


      Preferred Qualifications

      • Master's degree in related field or Juris Doctor degree.
      • Working knowledge of federal and state non-discrimination laws such as Title VI, VII, and IX and the Americans with Disabilities Act and related regulations and case law.
      • Experience conducting employment discrimination or other civil rights related investigations.
      • Experience working in or with institutions of higher education.
      • Experience with administering affirmative action obligations for a federal contractor.
      • Proven exceptional writing and analytical skills.


      Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

      • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and methodologies for conducting neutral fact-finding investigations.
      • Demonstrated ability to accurately analyze and apply legal and policy standards to specific factual patterns.
      • Ability to assess witness testimony, evaluate and weigh evidence and draw sound conclusions in complex matters.
      • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in a culturally competent manner with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
      • Ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues from other offices such as Human Resources, General Counsel, Student Affairs, and academic departments.
      • Sound judgment and integrity in performing duties with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information; ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress.
      • Ability to convey information to employees via in-person trainings on rights and responsibilities under university policies and civil rights laws.


      Background Information

      This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.       Equal Opportunity Analyst, Intermediate: Salary range begins at $65,000*

      Equal Opportunity Analyst, Senior: Salary range begins at $75,000*

      *Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

      FLSA Status

      This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

      Benefits

      This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
